The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) in-house construction team has set foot on the ground as they ready themselves for the start of work on their initial project, the Kitala – Gerenge road. The road, a 10km upgrading project is already on the go as mobilization of equipment and works on setting up of the camp are already in full gear.
Speaking at a meeting with the team, the Executive Director Mrs. Allen Kagina rallied the team to be the torch bearers for the new journey of construction that UNRA is about to embark on. “We’re breaking the notion that we cannot construct our own roads and must outsource the very business we’re in charging, if they can, why can’t we? Go out, be our torch bearers and do a great job. This is just the beginning of many such projects done in-house” Kagina said.
Mrs. Kagina urged the team to set a standard upon which the organization would hold private contractors. “This is for us to raise the standard in delivery of works. The standard to which we shall bring the private sector to benchmark. So, you must do it well” she said.
The meeting was hosted by Director Roads and Bridges Development Eng. Sam Muhoozi and Head of the construction team, Eng. Alfred Ogik. The team also got assurances of financial backing from the Directorate of Corporate services which was represented by Director Mrs. Edna Rugumayo and Head Finance, Mr. Brazza Kwesiga. The team later took a guided tour of the road and the Pearl Marina which is the initial phase of the satellite city slated to be developed on a 400-acre expanse of land in the Gerenge area.
