This Directorate is responsible for the protection of National Roads and Bridges infrastructure, providing ferry services that link the national roads network and carrying out road safety audits and road user education as well as incident and traffic flow management.

It is headed by a Director who oversees the four (4) Departments herein. These include, Ferry Services, Axle Load Management, Enforcement, and Traffic and Road Safety. These departments are all tasked with different roles;

Axle Load Management

To ensure compliance with axle load and gross load limits across the road network.

To ensure that vehicles, when loaded with cargo, observe vehicle dimensions limits.

To maintain weighing equipment and facilities.


  • To prevent encroachment on road reserves through managing and protecting secured road reserves.
  • To prevent vandalism of road furniture.
  • To clear the acquired Right of Way of any encroachers.
  • To ensure compliance with vehicle load regulations.
