On 2 July 2010, H.E. the President Yoweri Museveni launched the upgrading and tarmacking of the Fort Portal – Bundinbugyo road (103 Km).
The road is to be upgraded to bitumen standard with a 6.5 m tarmacked carriageway width and 1.5 m wide shoulders on either side. The constructed pavement will comprise 250 mm for improved sub-grade, 150 mm of sub-base and 150mm of crushed stone base providing at total pavement thickness of 550 mm (half a meter).
In order to fully achieve the project developments objectives, the new road will be diverted at Itojo and will connect to Semapya through Kibuuku, Burondo and Rwamabaale along the Sempaya – Rwebisengo road so as to avoid the steep gradients and sharp bends which characterizes the existing gavel road.
The works contract was awarded to M/s Chongqing International Construction Corporation for which a contract agreement was signed on 30 November 2009 for an amount of UGX 168 billion. The Supervision Consultant is M/s Gauff Ingeniure of Germany in association with Gauff Consultants.
The contract duration is 36 months and therefore completion of the works is scheduled for 4 January 2013.
